Songwriter Taura Stinson on how original ‘Just Look Up’ from ‘Don’t Look Up’ is the ultimate tune for the end of the world [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW]
“It was a bit of a challenge, thinking ‘oh my gosh,’ how are we going to pull it all off? I really wasn’t sure until I saw it, and said ‘oh my goodness,’ it was everything that I thought it would be,” acclaimed songwriter Taura Stinson admits about writing a song for the end of the world, and the light-bulb moment that led to the song “Just Look Up,” from “Don’t Look Up,” Netflix’s dark apocalyptic satire.
With ‘Just Look Up,’ songwriter Taura Stinson sees career continuing to go in same direction
What would the end of the world sound like? That was the question songwriter Taura Stinson and composer Nicholas Britell asked themselves when they set out to write a song for “Don’t Look Up,” the Netflix film about a looming apocalypse. Their answer resulted in “Just Look Up,” an Oscar-buzz-generating pop song performed by Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi, who also appear in the movie as alternative versions of themselves, that functions on two levels. The number is about rekindling a broken relationship, but also serves as a literal plea to look up — because in the film, there’s a comet, a not-so-subtle metaphor for climate change, hurtling toward Earth.
