Dreaming When I Wrote This Media — Past, Present, and Tomorrow
“Formerly Wild Serape and Believe Become Books”
____________
My first release, 100 Things Every Black Girl Should Know: For Girls 10 to 100, was written to spark conversations between mothers and daughters and to become the handbook for all the things I wish I had known growing up. It went on to receive the In The Margins Award for At Risk Youth, an honor given by librarians dedicated to providing meaningful reading to young people who need it most. Over time it has proven useful not only for girls but for women of all ages, continuing to inspire honest conversations in families, classrooms, and communities.
Readers have described it in ways that continue to move me:
“This book provokes necessary dialog. Mothers and daughters can see eye to eye in a way they may not have before, because now they have a handbook full of resources, anecdotes, and wisdom.”
“This book is lighthearted but serious at the same time. It is a gem that speaks across generations and continues to spark important conversations. Every young girl and every woman will find something here to hold onto.”
I later released my second book, 100 Ways to Love Yourself Inside and Out, at the very start of the pandemic within days of the shelter in place announcement. It was not the easiest moment to release something new, but the book became a sweet, quick read written as part of my own refresher course in self-love.
My focus is now not only on releasing my own books, but on helping others bring theirs to life. My goal is for Believe Become Books to be a launching point for storytellers who do not have access to the resources to self-publish. I am also finding new ways to tell stories through one of my favorite things in the world: collaboration. I am currently collaborating with a very special person on a very special book that I will share more about later this year.
In the meantime, if you have a story to tell rooted in triumph, resilience, healing, transformation, or manifestation, I would love to hear from you. Remember, we are who we think and believe we are, so believe the very best and watch it come true.
